From interim to permanent: Lee Bowyer appointed as Charlton manager

Lee Bowyer went through the revolving door and came back out where it all started.

Former Leeds, West Ham, and Newcastle United midfielder Lee Bowyer was patient and got rewarded with a new contract that will keep him at the helm of Charlton Athletic on a permanent basis for the rest of the season. He originally took over from former manager Karl Robinson in March and led the team to the League One playoffs, where Charlton was defeated by Shrewsbury Town. Afterward, Bowyer said he would only stay at the club if he was given the managerial position on a full-time basis.

He patiently waited for the team where he started his career to make a decision, even as the new season dawned, and was finally stripped of the caretaker tag today.

“I’m delighted and very proud to be the appointed manager,”

“I said when I first took charge that it was a fairytale to be back working at Charlton, the club I started playing at. I love the club and will give everything to get a promotion.”

“The players and the staff have been brilliant and I am looking forward to continuing working with them as together we aim for promotion.”

Charlton aspirations under Lee Bowyer

The Addicks dropped down to a lower level in 2016/17 and are desperate to return to the Championship as soon as possible. They’ve had a balanced start to the new season, with six goals scored, six goals conceded, two wins, two draws and two losses. As a result, Charlton is currently 10th on the table and have a meeting with Wycombe coming up in two days’ time.

Lee Bowyer

Lee Bowyer originally started his career in Charlton Athletic. He spent two years at the club before moving to Leeds United. He was a chippy player, who never ran away from confrontation and is remembered by many for his in-game fight with Newcastle teammate Kieron Dyer, which saw both of them receive red cards. Charlton will be hoping his edge rubs off on the players and helps them climb the League Two ladder.
