From Alpine to Aston Martin: Bob Bell joins as Technical Director

Bob Bell, who has left the Alpine team, now has a new position at Aston Martin, reporting directly to team boss Mike Krack

In an effort to catch up with the top Formula 1 teams, Aston Martin now has its own Technical Director in its ranks. The new position for the team has been filled by Bob Bell. The 65-year-old Northern Irishman last worked for Alpine. He recently left this racing team, as did Matt Harman (Head of Engineering) and Dirk de Beer (Head of Aerodynamics)

At Aston Martin, Bell reports directly to Team Principal Mike Krack, while Head of Engineering Dan Fellows now reports directly to Bell. The team describes the new addition’s duties as Technical Director as “overall responsibility across the areas of technology, engineering and performance”.

Bell has extensive experience in Formula 1. He has held high-ranking technical positions at McLaren, Benetton, Jordan, Renault, Mercedes, Marussia and most recently Alpine. During his time at Renault, he was involved in Fernando Alonso’s two world championship titles in the mid-2000s (2005 and 2006).

Commenting on joining Aston Martin, Bell said: “I am impressed by the progress Aston Martin has made in recent years. The opportunity to play my part is incredibly exciting. I’m looking forward to working with the great technical leaders at Silverstone.”

“The scale and ambition of this project is very motivating. I am a racer who can clearly see the hunger and determination in this team. I’m looking forward to playing my part with Mike and the rest of the team,” said Bell.

Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack, who was approached by Bell, spoke of the new signing as “an important appointment to ensure that we optimize everything as a team and focus on the right areas. Bob’s track record speaks for itself. His experience will help us move forward on our exciting journey.”
