Fröhlich: Zwayer will not referee a BVB match for the time being

Referee Felix Zwayer will not referee a BVB match in the near future. This was confirmed by referee boss Lutz Michael Fröhlich in an interview.

There had been heated discussions about Zwayer after the top match between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at the beginning of December (2:3). As a result, the 40-year-old referee will now not be assigned to a BVB match for the time being.

“In my opinion, it would not be responsible towards all sides in such a case or a comparable case to call the same constellation again,” said Fröhlich: “There should be some time in the country.

There will not be a second Merk/Schalke case.

However, Fröhlich ruled out the possibility of Zwayer no longer refereeing a match involving Dortmund: “There won’t be a second Merk/Schalke case.” The 64-year-old was referring to Merk’s late free-kick whistle in Bayern’s season finale against Hamburger SV (1-1) in 2001, which cost Schalke the title. After that, Merk did not referee a single match for the Königsblauen until his career ended in 2008.
