French Open: Early exit for defending champion

The next big surprise at the French Open is perfect. Reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova had to go home after the first round. She had won the first set by a clear margin.

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova was surprisingly eliminated in the first round of the French Open. The 26-year-old Czech lost 6-1, 2-6, 3-6 to 19-year-old Frenchwoman Diane Parry in Paris on Monday.

For a long time it did not look like an underdog victory. After winning the first set, Krejcikova broke the world number 97 right at the beginning of the second set and led 2:0. Then came the collapse and the Czech did not win a single game in the second set. It was the same picture in the third set, again Krejcikova led 2:0, but once again she could not hold the advantage and was eliminated.

Krejcikova, currently ranked number two in the world, had to take a long break before the French Open due to an injury, but was fit in time for the clay court classic at the Stade Roland Garros.

Last year, the Czech surprisingly celebrated her first Grand Slam title in Paris.
