Four-time Indy winner Al Unser senior has died

Ours died at the age of 82 after a long and serious illness. “He will be remembered as one of the best to ever race Indianapolis and we will all miss his smile, sense of humor, and warm, approachable personality,” said Circuit Director Doug Boles.

The American Unser won the oval classic in 1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987. He is a record winner together with AJ Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977), Rick Mears (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991) and the Brazilian Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009, 2021).

Our brother Bobby, three-time Indy winner, died in May at the age of 87. Al Unser junior (59) won the race in 1992 and 1994.
