Oliver Rowland won Saturday’s Formula E race in Monaco, further extending his lead in the championship
Oliver Rowland (Nissan) won the first Formula E race in Monaco on Saturday, celebrating his third victory of the season. The Briton further extended his lead in the overall standings with his victory in the principality.
Rowland prevailed on Saturday on the traditional city circuit against Nyck de Vries (Mahindra), who finished on the podium for the first time this season. Third place went to Jake Dennis (Andretti), who was able to save his position at the finish despite a time penalty for an offense under full course yellow.
Taylor Barnard (McLaren) started the race from pole position after beating Rowland in the battle for the fastest lap. Barnard led the race for a long time, but a driving error and a collision with the track barrier meant he finished only 16th.
Earlier, Antonio Felix da Costa (Porsche) had retired after an accident, triggering one of two full-course yellow phases. David Beckmann (Kiro) was also involved in this collision, which resulted in a damaged front wing. He finished the race in 15th place.
Edoardo Mortara confirmed Mahindra’s strong performance in fourth place, while Nico Müller (Andretti) finished fifth after leading for a while. World champion Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) was the best German in sixth place, and Maximilian Günther (DS-Penske) scored a World Championship point in tenth place.
The second race of the weekend will take place on Sunday. The start is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
