Formula E Miami: Wehrlein wins after disqualification, first podium for Lola

The Formula E race at Homestead-Miami Speedway was decided by a penalty – in the end, Pascal Wehrlein was named the official winner

Porsche victory in Formula E debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway: Pascal Wehrlein inherited the victory because Norman Nato, who had crossed the finish line first, was unable to complete his second attack mode. This was triggered by a race interruption shortly before the end.

Wehrlein, who was knocked out in the group stage for the first time this season in qualifying, drove cleverly in the race. The Porsche driver initially lined up behind his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa and waited until the decisive phase of the race approached.

Wehrlein used attack mode to overtake the Portuguese driver and take the lead shortly before a crash involving three cars turned the race upside down in the final phase.

The interruption of the race prevented some drivers from activating their final attack mode. Among them was Norman Nato (Nissan; 6th), who had overtaken Wehrlein in a photo finish in the last few meters.

Nato was not penalized for not accessing his additional power as prescribed, and the victory went to Wehrlein. After a weekend without points in Jeddah, the German is once again moving closer to the top in the title race.

Di Grassi makes history for Lola

Lucas di Grassi also scored a strong result: the Brazilian finished second and secured the first podium finish in the still young history of the Lola team.

Starting from seventh place on the grid, Di Grassi consistently remained in the top 10 and benefited from the race interruption in the chaos of the final laps. However, the result also underlines the progress of the project.

Antonio Felix da Costa completed the double podium for Porsche in third place. Nevertheless, the Portuguese driver was left with a bitter aftertaste: the race interruption cost him the chance to use attack mode at the right moment.

Nico Müller (Andretti; 4th) came in behind him. From 18th on the grid, the Swiss driver worked his way up to fourth place, giving Andretti a strong result in its home race. For Müller, it was also an important signal, as his season has been a mixed bag so far.

Edoardo Mortara came in behind him, collecting important points for Mahindra with fifth place. The team is increasingly benefiting from the homologation of the new powertrain. Norman Nato was classified in sixth place after his penalty.

Setback for Rowland

The remaining points places went to Dan Ticktum (Cupra Kiro; 7th), Robin Frijns (Envision; 8th), Jake Dennis (Andretti; 9th) and Oliver Rowland (Nissan; 10th). The weekend was disappointing for the latter.

He may have finished in fourth place after a braking problem in qualifying, but he was also penalized and dropped back to tenth place. Nevertheless, the powertrain is competitive – a good starting point for the rest of the season.

Thanks to his success, Pascal Wehrlein has moved up to third place in the drivers’ championship, behind da Costa and Rowland. In the teams’ standings, Porsche now leads with 105 points, ahead of Nissan with 79. In the manufacturers’ standings, however, Nissan is in the lead with 144 points, compared to 120 for Porsche.

The next round of the Formula E season will be held in Monaco on May 3rd and 4th.
