An overview of the engine parts that can be used during the 2025 season: when which Formula 1 driver faces a penalty
In Formula 1, the number of engines allowed has now been limited to just four power units. Some individual elements of the power unit are even more restricted.
According to Article 28.2 of the Sporting Regulations, the following will be permitted in 2025: four internal combustion engines (ICE), four MGU-Hs, four MGU-Ks, four turbochargers, two energy storage systems, and two control electronics units. The exhaust system is also restricted. A total of eight are permitted in a season.
If a driver uses more engine parts than permitted, he faces a penalty under Article 28.3: ten places on the grid for the first additional element, five places for each additional element.
If a driver receives more than 15 grid positions as a penalty in an event, they must start from the back of the grid.
Incidentally, it is no longer possible to collect engine parts: if two identical elements are replaced with penalties in an event, only the last component used may be used in the future without penalty.
Gearbox: No more limit
There is a change regarding the gearbox, which will no longer be subject to any restrictions in 2025. In previous years, drivers had to get through the season with five gearboxes, which were divided into outer and inner elements.
However, in February, the FIA World Council decided to completely delete Article 29, which regulates the use of the gearbox. The reason: “The reliability of the current designs makes a regulation obsolete.”
This means that drivers can now use as many gearboxes as they want.
