Former Moto2 rider Gomez killed in mass crash at Magny-Cours

Borja Gomez has died at the age of 20 in a training accident at Magny-Cours – The current ESBK leader was considered a promising young talent

Spanish motorcycle racer Borja Gomez, who had just regained the lead in the Spanish Superbike Championship (ESBK), died on Thursday (July 3, 2025) during a training session at the Circuit de Magny-Cours in France.

He was training for the upcoming race weekend from July 4 to 6 as part of the JuniorGP, more specifically the Stock 600 European Championship. The 20-year-old was involved in a mass accident on a Honda and was run over, according to several media reports. The family confirmed his death in the accident.

The accident occurred just a few days after the ESBK race at MotorLand Aragon, where Gomez, rider for the Honda Laglisse team, won the second main race of the weekend, regaining the overall lead – tied on points with Steven Odendaal, but with more wins. Both have 122 points. Gomez won four out of six races, one in Jerez and Aragon and two in Barcelona.

Gomez was also at the top of the overall standings in the Stock 600 class of the JuniorGP (formerly CEV, Spanish Motorcycle Championship): he scored 45 out of a possible 50 points in two race weekends, finishing second in Estoril and winning in Jerez.

In his all too short career, Borja Gomez became Spanish Supersport champion in 2021 and runner-up in the Superbike 1000 class in the ESBK. In 2022, he made his debut in the Motorcycle World Championship when he replaced Jorge Navarro in the HP40 team in the Moto2 race in Sepang, Malaysia.

In the season finale in Valencia, he finished twelfth and scored four World Championship points, even though it was only his second World Championship appearance. In 2023, Gomez rode a full season in Moto2 for Fantic Racing and competed in 13 races, but was unable to score any points. His best results were a 16th place in Austria and Indonesia.
