FM 24: The most important attributes for forechecking

Attacking pressing in Football Manager. A meta-tactic that leads to success. However, mastering this form of play requires know-how – there are many pitfalls. We show you eight attributes to look out for

The first pitfall is already on the way to the digital tactics board. Because before you get to it, you should take a close look at your squad. Is it even capable of meeting the requirements of attacking pressing? In the first of two parts on forechecking, we explain which eight attributes you need to look out for

The first step starts in the head

“Football matches are decided in the head” – a saying that has often proven to be true. The key to successful forechecking in FM actually lies between the ears. After all, it takes energy to keep on running.

This means that on the digital pitch, your players should be both determined and enthusiastic – and most importantly – be able to work well as a team. Loners who like to do their own thing and want to be in the limelight are not suitable for this tactic.

This is because they increase the error rate, which can expose the disadvantage of this style of play to the opponent. For example, if they break free from the pressing zones, they can quickly overplay the attack and midfield with a long ball

Speed for both offense and defense

Since mistakes cannot be completely avoided, it is important to take countermeasures. You already have one anyway. For the offense alone, it is essential that your players are fast and have a high level of acceleration and stamina

If the opponent takes the ball away from you, your fast-paced attackers can react quickly to losing the ball and start counter-pressing. Acceleration and sprinting are also essential for defenders. Should the opposing team get behind the defensive line with a ball, the defenders would be able to keep up or catch up in a running duel

Technically adept players also protect

As important as mentality and physicality are, your players should also be good with the ball. After all, it’s usually about switching quickly after winning the ball, which is why the pace of the passing game is higher.

Accordingly, a good first touch is required, which has two reasons. If a player needs too much time to control the ball, the offensive advantage may be lost. There is also an increased risk of losing the ball, especially if the opponent starts to counter-press. In addition to good first contact, offensive players should have a good passing game

In summary, you should pay attention to the following eight attributes if you want your attacking pressing to be successful: Determination, commitment, teamwork, speed, tackling, stamina, ball retention and passing. Once your squad is finally able to implement forechecking, you can move on to tactics. We’ll explain what you need to consider there in part two
