FC Barcelona solved the tricky task at San Mames and won 1-0 at Bilbao. In addition to match-winner Lamine Yamal, Pedri also had an influence. Hansi Flick then sang his praises.
“It’s really not easy to play here,” said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick after the narrow and hard-fought 1-0 away win at Athletic Bilbao, adding: “We had to manage our playing time well after Tuesday’s game. This win is very important to me. A clean sheet naturally gives us confidence and confirms our playing philosophy.”
On Tuesday, Barcelona almost achieved a miracle in the cup semi-final, but after losing 4-0 in the first leg, their 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid was not enough to reach the final. In the league, however, the Catalans did their homework and maintained their four-point lead over Real Madrid.
Once again, Lamine Yamal was the decisive factor on Saturday in the Basque Country, cutting in from the right and scoring a dream goal into the top left corner, which was to remain the only goal of the day. But Pedri, who came on at half-time and immediately took control of the midfield, also played a decisive role, as he provided the assist.
After the game, Flick sang the praises of the Spanish technical wizard: “I’ve said it before: Pedri makes everyone better. He changes the game. Dani Olmo also played better in the second half. But the most important thing is that everyone fought as a unit.”
“A special atmosphere”: Flick praises his team
With this unity, FC Barcelona ideally wants to win two titles this season. The Catalans are back in pole position in the league, and in the Champions League, they continue on Wednesday with the first leg of the round of 16 at Newcastle United. The Blaugrana are the favorites in this matchup.
“This team has a special atmosphere that I really appreciate,” Flick praised his team. “I appreciate their cohesion, everything is just fantastic. The guys are focused in training, and I saw that attitude again today.”
