First World Cup since 1986? Davies also beats Mexico with Canada

The Canadian national team can continue to dream of their first World Cup participation in 36 years

The team led by Alphonso Davies – the Bayern pro played 88 minutes – beat Mexico 2-1 (1-0) in snow-covered Edmonton on Tuesday (local time).

Goal-scorer Cyle Larin, signed from Besiktas in the summer of 2020, (45.+2/52.) scored a brace to give Canada victory over the Mexicans. Atletico pro Hector Herrera’s 90th-minute goal came too late. Should the Canadians qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, it would be only their second appearance since 1986 in Mexico.

The win vaulted Canada to the top of the North and Central America qualifying group. After eight games, the Canadians lead with 16 points ahead of the USA (15 points).

The latter had only drawn 1-1 (1-1) with Jamaica earlier on Tuesday. Lille’s Timothy Weah scored the early lead for the US team (11th), which West Ham forward Michail Antonio countered just eleven minutes later. Behind the US, Mexico are in the last direct World Cup qualifying spot with 14 points.
