First job after Formula 1 exit: Michael Masi facing new role in motorsport

Dismissed former Formula One racing director Michael Masi looks set to get a new job: He’s getting a senior role in his native Australia

Former Formula One racing director Michael Masi is set for his first new job since being ousted by the FIA. The Australian is to take over as chairman of the Supercars Commission in his homeland, replacing the previous chairman Neil Crompton, who resigned from his post at the end of June.

According to several sources, the V8 Supercars series plans to seek the approval of the teams this weekend at Sandown.

Masi is no stranger to the scene and has previously served as administrator for Supercars, where he was deputy race director, before moving to the FIA in 2018 as deputy to Formula One race director Charlie Whiting.

Following Whiting’s death ahead of the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, Masi was appointed as Whiting’s successor as race director, a role he held until the 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi. There, Masi came under fire for making some controversial decisions in the closing stages that resulted in Max Verstappen’s first World Championship title.

Masi was subsequently removed from office in the winter and replaced by Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas. Since then he has not held an official post in motorsport, but now he could soon become chairman of the Supercars Commission.

The Supercars Commission sets the technical and sporting rules in the Australian series. Its recommendations are then submitted to the board for final approval.
