First big surprise at Wimbledon

Daniil Medvedev narrowly missed out on the final at the traditional tournament last year. This time, the Zverev slayer’s journey came to an end right at the start.

Daniil Medvedev’s stay at Wimbledon this year is already over after his first match. The former world number one lost his opening match against France’s Benjamin Bonzi 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 2-6. This means that the Russian, who reached the semi-finals in the previous two years, has been knocked out surprisingly early this time around.

Bonzi had not won a match in the main draw of a grass court tournament since 2022. Medvedev, on the other hand, was in strong form just eight days earlier when he reached the final in Halle.

Tsitsipas also fails to get off to a good start

For 29-year-old Medvedev, this is the latest disappointment at a Grand Slam this year. He was knocked out in the second round in Melbourne and in the first round in Paris. At Wimbledon, he could have reached the quarterfinals against Alexander Zverev. Medvedev had won twelve of the last 14 matches against the German.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is also out of the tournament. The Greek player withdrew from his match against Frenchman Valentin Royer with the score at 3-6, 2-6, apparently due to back problems. Tsitsipas looked shaken by the high temperatures in southwest London. The two-time Grand Slam finalist was only seeded 24th at Wimbledon this year.
