FIFA World Player 2021: Haaland and Lewandowski among the eleven candidates

On Monday evening, the candidates for “The Best FIFA Football Awards 2021” were announced. The Bundesliga is not very well represented.

Who will replace Robert Lewandowski as FIFA World Player? Or will the Pole defend his title? This question will be settled on 17 January 2022. On this Monday, all candidates for “The Best FIFA Football Awards 2021” have been published.

In addition to Lewandowski, ten other candidates are up for election as world footballers. Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund), Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus), Jorginho, N’golo Kanté (both Chelsea), Neymar, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé (all PSG) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

In the women’s competition, there is not a single Bundesliga player, but four professionals each from FC Barcelona (Aitana Bonmati, Caroline Graham-Hansen, Jennifer Hermoso, Alexia Putellas) and Chelsea FC (Magdalena Eriksson, Pernille Harder, Ji So-yun, Sam Kerr). They are joined by Stina Blackstenius (BK Häcken), Lucy Bronze (ManCity), Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal), Ellen White (ManCity) and Christine Sinclair (Portland Thorns)

Candidates for Coach and Goalkeeper of the Year

From a German point of view, it will be interesting again in the election for Coach of the Year, where Hansi Flick and Thomas Tuchel will compete against Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Roberto Mancini, Argentina’s national coach Lionel Scaloni and Diego Simeone. Defending champion Jürgen Klopp is not among them.

Goalkeeper of the Year could once again be Manuel Neuer. Bayern’s number 1 will be challenged by Alisson, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Eduard Mendy and Kasper Schmeichel.
