The tennis icon has been retired from the sport for two and a half years – but he’s itching to get back out there.
Roger Federer has enjoyed his retirement, traveling around the world and working on projects close to his heart – but the 20-time Grand Slam winner does miss the court.
“I would like to play more tennis again. Lately I’ve been playing a lot of golf, but my goal is to get back on the court more often – maybe even play a few exhibition matches,“ the 43-year-old said at a Mercedes-Benz sponsorship event on the sidelines of the Masters golf tournament in Augusta.
”You have to experience it”
“After two or two and a half years, my body has recovered well, and I think now is the right time to play more tennis and enjoy it again,” the Swiss added, joking: ”Hopefully I can fill a few stadiums again.”
Nevertheless, the tennis idol is inspired by the freedoms that his retirement in 2022 has brought. “I have now simply found control over my rhythm, together with my family,” said the father of four, who fulfilled a dream by attending the legendary Masters.
“You have to experience it at least once,” said Federer, drawing parallels to his favorite tournament, Wimbledon – not only because of the noble turf at both locations: ”Lots of applause, then very quiet, then loud again, just as you actually know it from tennis. The atmosphere around the green, especially the legendary 18th hole, can also be compared a bit with the center court at Wimbledon.”
