Everton deducted another two points

For further breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, Everton FC have been punished with another points deduction. The Toffees want to appeal this one too – while the third penalty is already looming

It remains unclear how final the Premier League table will be after the final 38th matchday. It cannot be ruled out that some points accounts will change after May 19 – and thus the relegation question will be answered again retrospectively. And Everton FC are right in the middle of it.

The Toffees had already been deducted ten points for breaches of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, which they reduced to six following a successful appeal. On Monday, the English top flight announced the next verdict against the relegation-threatened traditional club. An independent commission came to the conclusion that Everton had exceeded the maximum permitted loss limit of 105 million pounds (around 122 million euros) by 16.6 million pounds (19.35 million euros) in the three-year period 2019/20 to 2022/23 and imposed a deduction of a further two points.

Everton smells double punishment – Premier League demanded higher point deduction

This would leave Everton, who celebrated an important 1-0 home win over penultimate-placed Burnley FC on Saturday, just two points ahead of Luton Town, who currently occupy the first relegation spot, with seven matchdays to go. However, the Toffees still have a catch-up game up their sleeve.

However, they hope to avert the two-point penalty. In particular, they argue that they have already been punished for the time in question – the first sanction affected the 2018/19 to 2021/22 seasons – and have lodged another appeal. They may feel strengthened by the fact that the Premier League had recommended a deduction of five points, but the commission agreed with some parts of Everton’s line of defense.

The relegation battle will also be decided outside the stadiums this season, as 17th-placed Nottingham Forest were also deducted four points for financial irregularities, but no decision has yet been made on their appeal. It is said that all decisions will be made by May 24 at the latest, just under a week after the final matchday.

And Everton are already facing the next penalty. The Liverpool club could also face a points deduction due to interest costs in connection with the construction of the new stadium
