“Epic” Messi returns: eFootball celebrates 750 million downloads

Konami has reason to celebrate. The developer has announced that eFootball has been downloaded 750 million times worldwide. The players should also celebrate this

The Japanese electronics company announced the milestone on Wednesday. On this occasion, Konami also announced that it would be celebrating “with a series of in-game events, items and prizes” between April 25 and May 16. The aim is to give something back to the players, who can look forward to three special versions of Lionel Messi from days gone by, among other things

Messi, Messi, Messi

The Argentinian superstar, official ambassador of the soccer simulation, will be the focus of the download celebrations in the form of “Big Time” cards. These items commemorate “some of his memorable achievements”, which date back to May 27, 2009, May 6, 2015 and December 13, 2022. In 2009 and 2015, ‘La Pulga’ lifted the European Champions League crown with FC Barcelona, sealing the treble of the top flight, championship and Copa del Rey. In 2022, he led the Albiceleste to the World Cup title in a breathtaking private duel with Kylian Mbappé.

It is quite possible that some of the Messi versions will also be on show at the World Finals of the eFootball Championship. The slimmed-down and quite critically viewed version of a world championship is to take place for the first time in year one after the big eSport bang. In Europe, the free-to-play game of soccer has lost much of its significance in recent years and has largely abandoned its competitive side. In order to play off the participants in the World Cup, club events are held in advance at some of Konami’s partner clubs. These include FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich, with Thomas Müller taking part as a witty eSports commentator.
