“Enjoy the responsibility”: Mainoo extends his contract with Man United

Manchester United and homegrown talent Kobbie Mainoo are joining forces for the long term. On Thursday, the youngster extended his contract with the Red Devils until 2031.

Just eight months ago, Kobbie Mainoo and Manchester United were on the verge of parting company. With little to no consideration from Ruben Amorim at the start of the season, the talented midfielder was keen for more playing time, according to The Athletic. A loan was discussed on the player’s side, but ultimately did not materialize.

Mainoo therefore stayed with his favorite club – unlike Amorim, who had to pack his bags shortly after the turn of the year and make way for Michael Carrick. A stroke of luck for the Red Devils and their currently hottest home-grown talent. Not only did Carrick lead the club, for whom he once played for ten years, back into the top flight, but he also backed Mainoo as a regular. Which is probably why he has now extended his contract until 2031.

“Manchester United has always been my home. This special club means everything to my family,” said the 21-year-old from the suburb of Stockport, explaining the extension. “I’ve grown up seeing the impact our club has on our city and I enjoy the responsibility that comes with wearing the shirt.”

Mainoo feels the momentum

In the jersey that Mainoo has been wearing for more than half of his life, the England 2024 European Championship player doesn’t just want to lead the way. After the FA Cup victory in 2024, including the final goal, he also wants to return it to its former glory more often: “We can all feel the momentum building in the club. I am determined to get even more involved and do my bit to ensure that Manchester United can regularly compete for major titles in the coming years.”

If the Red Devils’ management have their way, this should only be a matter of time. “We have every confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world and be ready to play a central role in a Manchester United fighting for top honors,” commented sporting director Jason Wilcox on Mainoo’s extension. Words that the youngster should enjoy. After all, too little responsibility sounds different.
