England’s former international striker Defoe ends his career

Former England international striker Jermain Defoe has ended his career at the age of 39, he announced himself via Twitter.

Defoe played in the Premier League for West Ham United and Tottenham, among others. He scored 162 goals in 496 games (ninth best scorer in the history of the Premier League) and 20 goals in 57 games for the English national team.

“After 22 years as a player I have decided to retire from professional football,” Defoe wrote on Twitter. “It was a really hard decision and one I have discussed with my family and those closest to me.”

After winning the Scottish Championship with Glasgow Rangers last year, the 39-year-old last played for Sunderland in England’s third-tier league. But now it’s finally over.
