Taylor Townsend has been forced to withdraw from the WTA tournament in Guadalajara shortly after her US Open doubles victory. The American has to undergo emergency surgery.
Taylor Townsend has had to withdraw from the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara at short notice. The 30-year-old American withdrew ahead of her round of 16 match due to emergency surgery, as she herself announced on Instagram. Last week, she won the US Open doubles title alongside the Czech player Katerina Siniaková.
“After winning my first career Grand Slam at the US Open, I was really looking forward to playing in front of you all in Guadalajara. However, due to an emergency operation, I have to withdraw from the GDL Open, which breaks my heart,” she explained in the statement. She did not disclose the reason for the operation.

A few hours earlier, she had already given her fans some initial reassurance: “This s*** definitely wasn’t on my bingo card. Despite the trials and tribulations, I’m back on my feet.” She then also posted a photo from her hospital bed.
Just on Monday, Townsend had won her opening match in Guadalajara against Tatjana Maria 6–7, 6–3, 6–2. A few days earlier, she and Katerina Siniakova had clinched the US Open doubles title with a 5–7, 6–0, 6–2 victory over Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery. The top-seeded pair thus completed the Career Grand Slam as a team – following their triumphs at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
In a statement to the tournament, Townsend said that, following the greatest success of her career, she had been particularly looking forward to Guadalajara. She announced her intention to return to the “best tennis fans” next year.
