Dybala scores twice: Roma win against Monza and remain unbeaten

AS Roma recorded their third win in their fourth game against AC Monza. Two goals from Paulo Dybala set up the win against a valiantly competing promoted side

After two wins and a 1-1 draw against Juventus Turin, the José Mourinho-coached AS Roma were looking to remain unbeaten against AC Monza. The promoted team, however, started briskly, with a lot of possession and vertical play forward. Rome, the clear favourites in this match, looked a little passive, but Monza were unable to create any dangerous goal-scoring chances.

Instead, Roma took the lead after 17 minutes and somewhat surprisingly: Abraham sent Dybala into the lane with a strong header. The Argentine shot from full speed and scored to make it 1:0.

Dybala adds to the tally – Monza come out of the dressing room well

The goal changed the game in favour of the home side, who were now the better and dominant team as expected. Abraham failed with his cross (25th) and seven minutes later he also failed with his shot, which keeper Di Gregorio was able to save. Dybala, however, followed up with determination and pushed the ball over the line to complete his brace (32nd minute).

After the break, Monza were again courageous and this time also came closer to the opponent’s goal, for example through Petagna (47th), Caldirola (49th) and Sensi (51st). However, in the second half Roma became more and more controlling and pressured – after a little more than an hour the home side made it 3:0. Roger Ibanez headed a corner kick into the goal of the visitors (61.).

In the final phase, there were chances on both sides: Machin’s shot only hit the crossbar (82nd) and Belotti failed to beat Di Gregorio on the other side (84th).

Rome’s win keeps them unbeaten and, at least for the moment, at the top of the table. On Sunday (20.45), the capitals are guests of Udinese Calcio. The following day, Monza will host Atalanta Bergamo at home (18.30 h)
