In the absence of top player Alexander Zverev, the German Davis Cup team advances to the next round thanks to a 3-0 victory over Peru.
Germany’s tennis team has advanced to the second round of the Davis Cup ahead of schedule. In Düsseldorf, the top doubles team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz converted the first of three match points for Germany with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Ignacio Buse and Conner Huertas del Pino, securing the decisive 3-0 win over Peru. On Friday, both Yannick Hanfmann (34) and Jan-Lennard Struff (35) paved the way against the South Americans without losing a single set. For Krawietz and Pütz, it was their 17th victory in their 19th Davis Cup match. The duo literally steamrolled the Peruvian pair at the start, taking the first set in just 19 minutes and conceding only three points. But Peru rallied and punished the careless favorites with their first set win of the qualifying round. This was a wake-up call for Pütz and Krawietz, who picked up the pace and ultimately played out the match with confidence.
Without top player Alexander Zverev, the first of two steps on the way to Bologna has been taken: 33 years after its last Davis Cup title to date, Germany can advance to the final tournament in September. Then the winner of the Croatia-Denmark match awaits. Even though the exact venue is still unclear, Germany will once again enjoy home advantage.
