Do Uruguay Have the Deadliest Strike-force at the World Cup?

There has been a lot of betting placed on who will claim the Golden Boot at the World Cup but whilst have one outstanding striker is great, having two is even better. So when you look at the teams competing in this tournament, there are only a few partnerships that really stand out.

Neymar is the favourite for the Golden Boot

The Golden Boot winning odds include as favourites: Neymar, Messi, Werner, Kane, Ronaldo, Jesus and Mbappe. Neymar and Jesus could form a formidable striking duo if Jesus can perform at this level. Between them, they have great potential to be the deadliest strike-force at the World Cup but Jesus’ inexperience may prevent that. They have not played together enough to form a really good understanding in the way that more established strike-forces have. Mbappe and Griezmann are similar; both are playing well and scoring but Mbappe is yet to step up at this level, being only 19 years old.

The Suarez and Cavani history

Uruguay’s Suarez and Cavani have played together for years and they are both playing at the highest level and scoring lots of goals in the process. It is often said that they see each other as rivals; both striving to be the big star of the national team. However, when they do play on the same pitch they bring a huge amount of talent to that Uruguay team.

Opportunities for lots of goals

Today they face Egypt in their opening game, with games against Saudi Arabia and Russia to follow. After seeing Russia put five past Saudi Arabia without any world class strikers on show, the Uruguayan duo must be confident of getting a bagful of goals. These players are not in the top favourites for the Golden Boot but they may turn out to be the strongest strike pairing at the tournament. Suarez has scored 50 goals for his national team and Cavani is just behind him on 42. You would certainly expect them to add to their current totals.
