DFB Women: The pressure is growing for the regular players

The German women’s national team is about to play its first World Cup qualifying matches. With them, the competition for the regular spots for the 2022 European Championships begins.

With the two opening matches of the World Cup qualifiers on Saturday against Bulgaria (4.05 pm) in Cottbus and on Tuesday against Serbia in Chemnitz (4 pm), the competition for the regular places for next year’s European Championship (6 to 31 July 2022) in England also begins for the German national players.

“The regulars get a lot of pressure – that makes us stronger as a team. “

SVENJA HUTH

“The competition always grows before a tournament like this,” says VfL Wolfsburg offensive player Svenja Huth. “Everyone wants to show themselves and play a lot. That makes us stronger as a team, because the regular players get a lot of pressure. In games against supposedly weaker opponents, however, it is also very important that everyone acts confidently and consistently.” Midfielder Melanie Leupolz of English champions Chelsea FC has clear goals for the games against Bulgaria and Serbia: “We want to win clearly and score as many goals as possible.” After all, “World Cup qualification is our big goal.”

Detail work at the mini-tournament

Before the European Championship in England, the DFB team will still take part in a preparatory tournament in the host country. The mini-tournament with four teams will take place between 14 and 24 February. In addition to the German team, England and Spain will also take part. The fourth participant and the venues will be announced shortly. “We will have top opponents and can still work on details. The tournament will be very helpful for us,” Melanie Leupolz is pleased to say.
