DFB-ePokal: In the footsteps of VfR Grünstadt

The draw for the round of 16 of the DFB ePokal has been made. Two amateur clubs are still represented, following in the footsteps of VfR Grünstadt

The cup has its own laws. This phrase seems to be true not only on the real grass, but also on the digital green. For example, third division team Viktoria Köln beat 1. FSV Mainz 05 – the current leaders of the South-East Division in the Virtual Bundesliga Club Championship.

Will more sensations follow? Two amateur clubs are still in the last sixteen of the competition. Firstly, the Blue Dragons, who play for DJK Heuweiler, and Greek eSports, which represents SV Lobeda 77. Both will be heading to Baden-Württemberg in the next round – the Blue Dragons will be making a virtual guest appearance at Karlsruher SC, while Greek eSports will play against VfB Stuttgart.

Greek eSports third strike?

On the way to the quarter-finals, both teams made some headlines. Greek eSports had previously managed to knock two VBL clubs out of the competition, Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Heidenheim. In round one, Blue Dragons defeated SC Freiburg – in the second round, however, there was a duel against another amateur club.

Both clubs are therefore hot on the heels of VfR Grünstadt – and IQONIC respectively. The eSports organization sensationally reached the semi-finals last year – knocking Hansa Rostock out of the tournament, among others. Blue Dragons in particular should not be underestimated. Jan-Luca Baß and Leon Krasniqi are experienced eFootball players at the controller.

RBLZ Gaming will also be fighting to defend their title. By winning the cup last year, the Saxons became the first German eFootball club to win the double of club championship and cup. Over the course of the season, they even added the Club World Cup to their portfolio. In the round of 16, the reigning cup winners will face SV Elversberg, who have already beaten Leipzig in the VBL season.

SV Werder Bremen will also face FC Augsburg, 1. FC Kaiserslautern Borussia Dortmund, FC St. Pauli VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Magdeburg Hamburger SV and Viktoria Köln Holstein Kiel
