Mixed emotions following the German coaching showdown between Matthias Jaissle and Marco Rose on this third Premier League matchday. While the latter is still waiting for his first three points on the Cherries’ bench, the Magpies’ coach secured a comeback point after trailing 0–2.
Both Matthias Jaissle—who has coached in Leipzig’s youth system and Salzburg’s first team—and Marco Rose (also Salzburg and Leipzig) hail from the RB universe. Now the two faced off for the first time with their new clubs in the Premier League—with Jaissle and Newcastle United coming out on top.
Yet it all started off badly: Bournemouth striker Tavernier put the visitors up 1-0 as early as the 9th minute after being the first to spot a deflected pass and coolly finishing from point-blank range past Newcastle keeper Hornicek. To make matters worse, the Magpies found themselves down 0-2 in the 35th minute. That’s when Thiaw, a seven-time German international, scored an unfortunate own goal.
And what an unfortunate moment it was. The former Schalke and Milan player was actually in the right position after a shot by Kluivert hit the post, but a cross was played so unluckily to his right foot that the ball arced high into the back right corner of the net.
Barnes with a dream goal, Ramsey from deep
Thiaw, who also added a strong defensive save to his list of achievements that Saturday afternoon, didn’t let it bother his team, though. Instead, just two minutes after the 0–2, teammate Barnes scored a dream goal to pull one back before halftime. After receiving a through ball down the right flank, the 28-year-old Englishman, in typical fashion, cut inside with a short dribble to curl the ball beautifully and unstoppably into the right corner.
A sigh of relief? Certainly. Nevertheless, the Magpies had to exercise a fair amount of patience in their clash with the Cherries on this third Premier League matchday to remain undefeated following a challenging yet successfully navigated start to the season (a 2–2 draw against Liverpool and a 2–0 win at Tottenham Hotspur). The breakthrough that secured the point came in the 88th minute, when Ramsey pounced on a ball that Bournemouth’s defense had failed to clear properly twice, firing a low shot into the bottom right corner.
While new coach Jaissle remained unbeaten with Newcastle and boosted their tally to five points, Rose—who took over in the summer—remained winless with the Cherries (two points).
