Despite losing streak: Seawolves hold on to coach Held

Although the Rostock Seawolves have lost their last eleven league games, the management and supervisory board have placed their trust in coach Christian Held. Together, the Rostock Seawolves now want to defend their lead over the relegation places

Eleven defeats in a row, most recently the Rostock Seawolves let a ten-point lead slip away in the final minutes at penultimate-placed Heidelberg. Last year’s promoted team conceded a total of 37 points in the fourth quarter against the Academics. As a result, Rostock is now just one win away from a relegation spot.

It goes without saying that the day after the latest defeat, there were also discussions about the appointment of head coach Christian Held. With the result that the club will continue to work with the 35-year-old promotion coach. Held is also aware that this is a very unusual situation in professional sport: “I am grateful for the trust placed in me. A situation like this is anything but normal, but an extremely unusual step. I really appreciate it. “

Rostock played in Europe for the first time this season

Held, who came to Rostock in the summer of 2020 after years as assistant and head coach at the Gladiators Trier, initially as assistant coach to long-time national coach Dirk Bauermann, had led the Seawolves into the BBL as head coach in 2022. In their first year in the Bundesliga, the Hanseatic League side confidently secured relegation and even competed internationally in the FIBA Europe Cup for the first time this season.

However, the team recently slumped in the BBL, not least because it was repeatedly plagued by injury worries. Accordingly, the aim now is to turn things around as quickly as possible in order to compete in the top flight in the coming season. “We now have eleven final games ahead of us with Christian Held as Head Coach of the Rostock Seawolves. In the current situation, it is important to tackle this challenge together as a team and overcome it. Christian Held enjoys our trust for this task,” emphasizes CEO André Jürgens.

The first of the eleven final games awaits the Rostock Seawolves on Friday when they host Bamberg Baskets in Rostock’s Stadthalle (8 p.m.).
