Despite bad experiences: Xhaka is the new Sunderland captain

Granit Xhaka is back in the Premier League – and straight into the captain’s armoury. The former Leverkusen player speaks of an “honour”, even though he does not have only good memories of wearing the armband.

Promoted AFC Sunderland will start the Premier League season on Friday with Granit Xhaka as captain. The Black Cats announced on Thursday morning that the new signing from Bayer 04 Leverkusen has been named the new captain. He succeeds Dan Neil, who led the team to the top flight via the playoffs but has been the subject of transfer rumors this summer.

“I am incredibly proud to be captain of this club and this team. I hope to demonstrate my leadership qualities on and off the pitch and help my teammates on the training ground and throughout the club,“ Xhaka is quoted as saying by his new employer. ”It is an honor to be part of Sunderland’s history, alongside some of the names who have worn the captain’s armband before me.”

Xhaka, who was still captain of Leverkusen’s double-winning side in 2024, had pushed hard for a return to the Premier League in the summer and finally got his wish after Sunderland increased their offer to €20 million including bonuses. The 32-year-old midfielder also wears the armband for the Swiss national team – although it has brought him little luck so far, except in England.

Xhaka didn’t even last two months at Arsenal

In September 2019, he was appointed captain of Arsenal by coach Unai Emery, but had to relinquish the role to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang less than two months later after a scandal during a home game against Crystal Palace: After Arsenal fans booed him when he was substituted, Xhaka got carried away with provocative gestures and words on his way off the pitch, sparking weeks of debate.

Just under six years later, Xhaka has matured and was the logical choice for Sunderland’s management. “In the Premier League, it will be important to show consistency, maturity, and experience. Granit has all these qualities. His behavior has been very impressive so far,” said coach Regis Le Bris. “The others around him feel this influence. His leadership qualities will support the team as we settle into a new environment and face new challenges.”

Xhaka had already made it clear when he signed that he wanted to lead the way. “The people who know me know exactly what to expect from me—I’m someone who demands a lot,” he emphasized once again. “I’m a winner and I want to win—and I expect the same from my teammates.” Sunderland kicks off the new season on Saturday (4 p.m.) against West Ham United.
