Deaths due to mass panic at Cameroon vs. Comoros

The sporting aspects of the Africa Cup quarter-final between Cameroon and the Comoros (2:1) fade into the background. Before the match, there was a mass panic including fatalities.

A mass panic before the match between hosts Cameroon and Comoros has left several people dead and scores injured, according to media reports. The AP news agency reported on Monday evening that at least six people had died, citing regional governor Naseri Paul Biya.

There may have been others killed. At least 40 people were injured. The panic is said to have been triggered in the run-up to the round of 16 final between the hosts and the Comoros at the Olembe Stadium in the capital Yaoundé, because many people did not come to the stadium.

According to reports, 50,000 people tried to watch the match. The stadium can hold 60,000 spectators, but only 80 per cent of the seats (48,000) were allowed to be filled because of Corona regulations. Cameroon’s match against Comoros (2-1) had started at 8pm CET; initially there was no information about incidents. Cameroon’s victory puts them into the quarter-finals, where they will face Gambia.
