Crazy plans unveiled for US Open

The US Open grounds are to be modernized at a cost of $800 million. The tournament is set to become even more spectacular.

A new look for the world’s largest tennis arena: Arthur Ashe Stadium and the entire US Open site in New York are undergoing a $800 million (more than €700 million) renovation.

The US Tennis Association (USTA) proudly announced the “largest single investment in the history of the tournament” on Tuesday night German time – and taxpayers will not be burdened with a single cent.

“This project will allow us to preserve the greatest stage in tennis, built more than 25 years ago, and modernize it so that it is ready for the next 25 years,” said USTA CEO Lew Sherr. Players will enjoy a ‘unique space’ and ‘more luxury off the court.’

US Open: Arthur Ashe Stadium to be expanded

A new, large “Player Performance Center” with changing rooms, fitness studios, and warm-up areas will be built.

Arthur Ashe Stadium will get a new main entrance and the lower tier will be expanded by 2,000 seats. “In our day, we would have said, ‘What the hell is that?’” enthused tennis icon John McEnroe. “The players will be thrilled.”

The work is scheduled to be completed in 2027 and will not interfere with the Grand Slam tournament. This year, the US Open will be played from August 24 to September 7.
