Correa bids farewell to Atlético – but the club puts him in his place

After more than ten years at Atlético Madrid, Angel Correa bid farewell to the fans in his last home game. The club was less than thrilled.

Many of Atletico’s club officials were likely displeased when Angel Correa said an emotional and tearful goodbye to the fans after the match against Betis. Just minutes earlier, the substitute had scored the final goal in a 4-1 win over the Andalusians, his fourth goal in 30 appearances this season for the crowd favorite.

His teammates, on the other hand, simply joined in the celebrations, with Koke, José Gimenez, and fellow Argentine Juan Musso accompanying him on his farewell tour of the stadium. The 30-year-old, who has worn the red and white jersey since December 2014, also said goodbye on social media. “Today I played my last home game in this jersey that I love so much. It wasn’t just another day, it was a collection of memories, emotions, and gratitude. Thank you to the club, to my teammates, and to these incredible fans who have always made me feel like one of them.”

Clarification from Atletico

However, the club apparently does not expect gratitude from Correa, but rather that he read through his contract. Atletico made this clear in a press release. “In view of the doubts that arose at the end of yesterday’s match against Real Betis at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the club would like to clarify that Angel Correa currently has a contract with Atletico Madrid until June 30, 2026,” it said. “No club has contacted our club to start negotiations for a possible transfer of our striker, nor has his agent made us an offer for the Argentine international.”

Atletico then listed Correa’s achievements. With 465 competitive appearances (88 goals), he is the sixth most capped player in the club’s history. There was also talk of a “brilliant career,” which “the club will duly honor in due course, when the player’s contract expires or in the event of a transfer to another club.”

However, Atlético may simply not want to be held to ransom and instead exert counterpressure on the interested party – who, according to reports, is Tigres UANL. The Mexicans are said to be offering six million euros for the dribbling winger. According to Marca, however, this is far too little for the Colchoneros, who now apparently want to make that clear.
