Contract until 2024 “in the second home” Halstenberg remains in Leipzig

At the end of the month, Marcel Halstenberg’s contract at RB Leipzig expires. Now it is clear: The 30-year-old will continue his career with the Saxons.

After the cup final against SC Freiburg, talks about the new contract entered the final phase, but even before the last game of the season for Domenico Tedesco’s team, there was largely agreement among those involved.

Now the decision has been made: Defensive player Halstenberg will continue his career with the reigning Cup winners, with whom he has been under contract since the end of August 2015.

Contract until 2024

The international (nine appearances for the DFB, one goal) will receive a new two-year contract until 30 June 2024.Left-footed Halstenberg now has 200 competitive appearances (14 goals) with Leipzig. “I am very happy that my sporting future has now been clarified and that it continues to lie in Leipzig. The city and the club are my second home,” Halstenberg said in an official statement from his club.

Comeback in March after long forced break

The past season, however, was not quite so positive, even if the first title was celebrated in the end. Injuries such as a persistent capsule blister and knee surgery caused an almost eight-month forced break, and it wasn’t until the beginning of March that he celebrated his comeback: eight Bundesliga games, four Europa League games and three cup games were on the books.

“Especially last year, when I had to cope with personal strokes of fate and had to fight injuries for a long time, everyone stood behind me one hundred per cent and signalled to me that RB Leipzig would continue to rely on me in the future. That was confirmed, especially in the second half of the season,” said Halstenberg.

Cup win an “additional boost “

In the Berlin final, he was shown the red card in the 57th minute, but his colleagues turned the game around against Freiburg when they were shorthanded and won on penalties. “I have already had seven great years here, which have now been crowned with the DFB Cup. This triumph will stay with us forever, but it will also give us an extra boost. I’m hungry for further success and will continue to do everything in the future to ensure we achieve our goals. “
