CONMEBOL’s wish: one-off anniversary World Cup with 64 teams

From 48 to 64 participating countries in the FIFA World Cup. At least that’s the plan for South America for the anniversary edition in 2030.

The South American continental association CONMEBOL wants to play the anniversary World Cup in 2030 with 64 teams. “We are convinced that the centenary will be unique, because you only turn 100 once. That is why we are proposing that this anniversary be celebrated once with 64 teams on three continents at the same time,” said association head Alejandro Dominguez at a confederation meeting.

Most recently, the president of the Uruguayan association, Ignacio Alonso, had already proposed at a meeting of the FIFA Council that the field of participants be expanded by another 16 teams from 48 to 64 for the tournament in five years.

More games in South America?

Uruguay, like Argentina and Paraguay, has already been awarded an opening match to mark the 100th anniversary of the World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will then be the co-hosts. With a larger number of participating teams, the South Americans could play more matches in their countries.
