Confusion about Kuntz: Turkey coach still in office after all?

He was thought to be fired, but now the federation denies it: What is the status of Turkish team manager Stefan Kuntz, who is also being traded as the German national coach? The situation is confusing.

Stefan Kuntz as Hansi Flick’s successor, as the new national coach? A thought experiment that suddenly became tangible because Turkish media had unanimously reported on Sunday that the 60-year-old had been dismissed as Turkey’s national coach. Among others, the pro-government news agency DHA. The termination of his contract was said to be imminent, and Joachim Löw, of all people, was being considered as his successor.

Only one day later, the possible turnaround. Now the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has denied the reports about Kuntz’s alleged dismissal, which, as with Flick, would follow a defeat against Japan. The statement also says that Kuntz has been invited to a meeting on Wednesday, the reason for which is not explained further. The former striker has yet to comment himself.

The 1996 European champion has been in charge since September 19, 2021, when he signed a contract valid until after the 2024 European Championship in Germany. According to the newspaper “Sabah”, he is to receive compensation of 1.2 million euros.

There are currently many indications that once again a Turkish national coach is caught in the maelstrom between the incumbent president and candidates who want to become his successor. Not for the first time, contradictory rumours are circulating about Kuntz’s sporting situation and future. Plenty of confusion these days, which Kuntz himself may soon be able to clear up. The majority of his situation indicates that a separation is imminent.
