Comeback after 17 years? F1 circuit in Monaco to become part of the WRC

The World Rally Championship (WRC) is planning a spectacular return to the Formula 1 circuit in Monaco in 2026 – for the first time since 2008

The legendary Formula 1 circuit in Monaco could become part of the World Rally Championship (WRC) again next year. As part of the 2026 Monte Carlo Rally, a spectacular special stage is to be held on parts of the famous city circuit for the first time since 2008.

As the organizers announced on Friday, the route is currently being reviewed. The plan is to use the lower section of the Grand Prix circuit. If the plan is approved, the service park will be moved from Gap to Monte Carlo one day earlier than usual on Saturday. The stage in Monaco would then conclude Saturday’s program.

The circuit has been part of the Monte Carlo Rally twice in the past. In 2008, Chris Atkinson in a Subaru and François Duval in a Ford set exactly the same fastest time. Atkinson had already won the stage the year before with a 0.5-second lead over Marcus Grönholm.

The 2026 season opener will take place from January 22 to 25 and will comprise a total of 17 asphalt stages. The action kicks off on Thursday evening with three stages, two of which will be held in the dark. Friday will be the longest day of the rally with 129.38 timed kilometers. Saturday’s program includes 78 kilometers, including a completely new section between La Breole and Bellaffaire covering 30.10 kilometers.

The rally will conclude on Sunday with two runs through the Col de Braus/La Cabanette (12.48 kilometers) and La Bollene-Vesubie/Moulinet (23.33 kilometers) special stages. This stage takes the drivers over the legendary Col de Turini and will once again be classified as a Power Stage.

A decision on whether the Formula 1 circuit in Monaco will actually be included in the program will be made in the coming weeks.
