Initially, streaming service DAZN had secured the broadcasting rights for all Club World Cup matches, but now it has been confirmed that FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund matches will also be broadcast on free TV.
As ProSiebenSat1 and DAZN announced on Wednesday, the company has secured a sublicense for the broadcast of individual matches of the Club World Cup, which begins in mid-June, for the German market. Sat.1 will broadcast all matches of the two German representatives, FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, live on free-to-air TV and on the streaming platform Joyn.
Matches in the knockout stages will also be broadcast on free-to-air TV – either the relevant Bayern and Dortmund games or, even if neither team reaches the round of 16, one match per round and the final will be shown live on Sat.1.
“With this acquisition, we are offering soccer fans in Germany more top games live and free of charge during the Bundesliga break,” said Henrik Pabst, Chief Content Officer at ProSiebenSat.1.
Müller’s last Bayern game on free TV
This also means that Thomas Müller’s last game in a Bayern jersey will be shown live on free TV. The 35-year-old FCB legend’s contract expires in the summer and will not be renewed, meaning his departure from Munich is imminent. When Müller will play his last game for FC Bayern depends on how far the Munich team gets in the Club World Cup.
Bayern will first face New Zealand’s Auckland City (June 15), Argentina’s Boca Juniors (June 21), and finally Benfica Lisbon (June 24) in their group of four, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage. Dortmund will face Fluminese from Brazil (June 17), Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa (June 21) and South Korea’s Ulsan HD FC (June 25).
Without exception, all matches of the Club World Cup, which is being held in its new format with 32 teams for the first time, will be shown free of charge on DAZN. Fans only need a DAZN account to watch all 63 matches, but no paid subscription is required.
