CL Round of 16: Draw, teams, TV – and a new rule

On 13 December, the pairings of the Champions League Round of 16 will be drawn. Who is involved, who will broadcast the matches live and what is new this year – an overview.

When will the draw for the 2021/22 Champions League last 16 be made?

The draw for the round of 16 pairings will take place on Monday 13 December at 12 noon in Nyon.

What is the draw for the round of 16?

As always, the eight top and eight second-placed teams in the Champions League group stage will qualify. The eight group winners are seeded and enjoy home advantage in the second leg against one of the group runners-up. Excluded from the start of the knockout round are duels between teams from the same group or the same association.

Which teams have already qualified for the Champions League last 16?

Bayern Munich (Group winners)
Ajax Amsterdam (Group winners)
Liverpool FC (Group winners)
Manchester City (Group winners)
Manchester United (Group winners)
Real Madrid (Group winner)
Juventus Turin (Group winners)
Lille (Group winners)

Inter Milan (Group runners-up)
Sporting Lisbon (Group runners-up)
Paris St. Germain (Group runners-up)
Atletico Madrid (Group runners-up)
Benfica Lisbon (Group runners-up)
RB Salzburg (Group runners-up)
Chelsea (Group runners-up)

Atalanta Bergamo and FC Villarreal are still battling for second place behind Manchester United after being cancelled due to snow on Thursday (3pm).

When are the matches of the Champions League round of 16?

The round of 16 matches will be played over a month, with the first legs taking place on 15/16 and 22/23 February 2022, and the second legs on 8/9 and 15/16 March. All matches will kick off at 9pm.

Who will broadcast the Champions League Round of 16 live on TV?

As in the group stage, streaming provider DAZN will show the majority of the matches live. On each Tuesday date, however, Amazon Prime is also allowed to exclusively broadcast one match of your choice live in the knockout phase. In total, four of the 16 round of 16 matches will not be shown on DAZN.

What’s new in the Champions League Round of 16?

Because UEFA has abolished the away goals rule, there could be more extra time and penalty shootouts in the second legs. All duels in which the score is tied after 180 minutes of play – regardless of the number of away goals scored – will go to extra time. If both teams have scored the same number of goals even after 30 minutes of extra time, the penalty shoot-out will decide the outcome.
