Panathinaikos Athens and Olympiacos Piraeus are well known for their fierce rivalry. In the current final series, hostilities are continuing to escalate. Now the Greek government is considering canceling the playoff season.
In yesterday’s second clash between the two bitter rivals, Olympiacos Piraeus managed to level the series at 1-1 (91-83).
However, the bigger headlines that evening were made by events off the court. Panathinaikos owner Giannakopoulos was ejected from the arena before tip-off. In addition, there were various incidents between the two sets of fans.
Now the Greek government wants to put a stop to the violent atmosphere. The next game, which was supposed to take place on Wednesday, has been postponed indefinitely.
Talks between the officials of both clubs and the government are to take place shortly. If no agreement is reached, the final series will be canceled, confirmed government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis.
