Manchester United had to be patient for some time, but on Monday evening, the Red Devils finally presented their next prominent new signing. Bryan Mbeumo is joining from Brentford.
Manchester United presented its first summer signing, Matheus Cunha, at the beginning of June for almost €75 million. The team, which finished 15th in the table last season, is clearly keen to avoid another disappointing season and is adjusting its transfer strategy accordingly. Bryan Mbeumo is the latest expensive signing to arrive at Old Trafford. He signed a contract until 2030, which could be extended until 2031.
“As soon as I heard there was a chance to join Manchester United, the club of my dreams and the club I wore the shirt for as a kid, I wanted to take that opportunity,” the 25-year-old attacking player said on United’s website. Jason Wilcox, Manchester’s director of football, was also delighted with the transfer: “He has achieved outstanding statistics in terms of goals and assists in the Premier League. His consistency has made him one of the most productive players in England over the last three years.”
For the first time since 2019: Two players from the competition
Following the signing of Mbeumo, who was officially presented on Monday evening and is said to have cost the Red Devils around €75 million plus €7 million in bonuses, United officials have made a move that has not been seen since the summer of 2019: For the first time in six years, at least two professionals from league rivals are permanently moving to the red half of Manchester within a single season.
Strengthening the squad with Premier League players had become a rarity at ManUnited in recent years. After Harry Maguire (from Leicester) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (from Crystal Palace) were bought for a lot of money in the summer of 2019, the Red Devils only signed Christian Eriksen (2022/23, Brentford) – albeit on a free transfer – and Mason Mount (2023/24, Chelsea) from fellow Premier League clubs.
Another bitter loss for the Bees
It seems that a rethink has taken place at United, which of course also involves high transfer spending once again. With 28 goal contributions (20 goals, 8 assists) in 38 league games, Mbeumo has recently proven impressively that he can deliver at the highest level. ManUnited scored only 44 goals in total in 2024/25, with no player reaching double figures.
Brentford, meanwhile, loses another key player from last season, which saw the Bees finish in 10th place, following the departure of head coach Thomas Frank. Together with his attacking partner Yoane Wissa (19 goals, 5 assists), who is himself being linked with Nottingham, Newcastle, and Tottenham, Mbeumo played a key role under the Danish coach, who will be coaching Tottenham in the future and would probably have liked to lure the 25-year-old Cameroonian to Spurs. But now Mbeumo is a player at his childhood dream club.
