Back to his roots: Luca Zidane, son of French soccer icon Zinedine Zidane, will play for Algeria in future.
The Algerian national team is getting a prominent reinforcement, at least in name: the new goalkeeper who will play for the North Africans in future is called Zidane. Luca, son of former world footballer Zinedine Zidane, is allowed to change association after FIFA granted him permission to do so.
The 27-year-old has only played for the French U-20 team so far and is eligible to play for Algeria due to his father’s origins. Luca Zidane is the second-oldest son; the keeper has three brothers, all of whom are or were professional soccer players. The goalkeeper currently plays for FC Granada, which is at the bottom of the Spanish second division.
Algeria needs one more win to qualify
His goal is to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico by changing federations. Algeria currently leads qualifying group G. A win against Somalia in early October would secure their World Cup ticket.
It remains to be seen whether Zidane will then be playing alongside Bundesliga pros such as Ramy Bensebaini (Borussia Dortmund) or Fars Chaibi (Eintracht Frankfurt).
