The previous record lasted just one year: more goals have been scored on the second matchday of the Champions League than ever before.
More matches, more goals: the Champions League reform is setting new records. On Matchday 2 of this year’s group stage, more goals were scored in a single matchday of the Champions League than ever before since the group stage was introduced in the 2024/25 season.
A total of 78 goals were scored in the matches on Tuesday and Wednesday. The previous record stood at 71 goals. This record was set last season – on the third matchday of the group stage.
Liverpool win nine-goal thriller
Once again, the strikers proved particularly clinical. Nine goals were scored in the match between Linzer ASK and Liverpool FC on Wednesday alone. Bradley Barcola was the standout performer in the Reds’ 6–3 victory, scoring a hat-trick.
Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain also put on a spectacle, securing a 4–2 win away at Manchester City.
