“If he had fallen…”: Slot struggles with penalty interpretation

After four wins in a row, Liverpool FC had to settle for a goalless draw against Leeds United. After the game, the lack of a penalty call was a topic of discussion, with LFC coach Arne Slot complaining about a lack of consistency in the referees’ decisions.

What happened? In the 14th minute, Ibrahima Konaté sent his compatriot Hugo Ekitiké on his way with a long ball. The Frenchman held his own in a duel with Leeds defender Jaka Bijol, who was extremely aggressive and pushed the boundaries of what is allowed. The move did result in a good chance: Ekitiké crossed to Florian Wirtz, whose shot was blocked. But then a discussion arose as to whether Bijol’s holding should have resulted in a penalty.

LFC coach Arne Slot initially took the wind out of the sails of this question at the press conference. “No, because he stayed on his feet,” said the Dutchman, who then went on to express his displeasure. “If he had fallen, there would probably have been a penalty.” That is precisely the problem, according to Slot: the lack of consistency in dealing with such scenes. “This season, we have so often been fouled in the penalty area and not been awarded a penalty. Maybe that’s why our players think, ‘OK, let’s just try to stay on our feet.’“

He specifically cited the example of Cody Gakpo, who, in his opinion, was brought down illegally in the 2-3 defeat at Brentford at the end of October, but was only met with a weary ”play on” from the referee. “Maybe that’s why our players try everything to stay on their feet. Then it’s difficult for VAR to intervene – or for the referee to award a penalty.”

First penalty for Liverpool? “Quite surprising”

However, he would never consider encouraging his players to dive in the future. “I’m not going to encourage them to do that – and if I told you now that I was going to start encouraging them to do that, we’d probably never get a penalty again. So, no.”

There was a hint of irony in this statement, as LFC has only been awarded one penalty in the current Premier League season. “For the team that has the most possession and attacks so much in and around the opponent’s penalty area, that’s perhaps quite surprising,” said Slot. On the other hand, the Dutchman complained that “we’ve had a few called against us where there was hardly any contact: Brentford away, Crystal Palace in the Community Shield – I could go on and on with examples.”

Slot certainly did not want to use the incident as an excuse or reason why his team failed to win Thursday night’s game against Leeds. After all, his team still had plenty of time and opportunities to score a goal in other ways. “We saw a team that wanted it, that kept trying. But it was difficult for us to find a gap.”

Defensive bulwark holds firm: ManCity drops points in Sunderland

Manchester City suffered a setback at the top of the Premier League table with a 0-0 draw at AFC Sunderland. For the Skyblues, this also ended their run of eight consecutive competitive wins at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland coach Regis Le Bris decided to make a change after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United: Mayenda started on the right wing in place of Riggs (bench).

City coach Pep Guardiola rotated two positions compared to the 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest. Aké and Savinho started in place of Gvardiol and Reijnders (both bench).

Bernardo Silva offside, Black Cats with power

ManCity had more of the game at the start and took an early lead: However, Bernardo Silva’s goal after Haaland’s header from a corner was disallowed because the Portuguese player was narrowly offside when the ball was played (6th minute). But as the game progressed, Sunderland got into the game better. After a combination between two former Leipzig players, Brobbey had the Black Cats’ first good chance in the 19th minute. And as the first half progressed, Sunderland were even the more dangerous team. After a mistake by Foden in his own penalty area, Ruben Diaz just managed to prevent worse for the Skyblues against Mayenda. Shortly afterwards, Haaland’s shot at the other end was not accurate enough (37′). However, the last chance before half-time was reserved for the home side: Hume headed Xhaka’s perfect cross just over the crossbar (45+4).

Substitute Gvardiol hits the woodwork

After the break, Guardiola’s team once again dominated the early stages. Savinho shot over the goal from a full run under pressure (47′). Shortly afterwards, the Brazilian failed to beat Roefs from five yards out – and then had to leave the field shortly afterwards for returnee Doku because he had injured himself in the action (51′). At half-time, the injured Nico had already remained in the dressing room, having been replaced by Rodri, who was also returning from injury (46′).

Even though Mayenda failed to beat Donnarumma with a good chance shortly afterwards (54′), the introduction of Doku provided some stimulation for the Skyblues, who gradually developed more and more pressure. Joker Gvardiol failed to beat Roefs with a header from a striker’s position (65′). Shortly afterwards, Mukiele somehow managed to block a powerful shot from Doku from close range with his head (74′). Gvardiol once again artistically guided the ball onto the outside post (74′). Once again, it was the former Leipzig player who missed the last good chance of the game in the 89th minute.

Promoted Sunderland, who remain unbeaten at home in the league, will be guests at Tottenham on Sunday (4 p.m.). Shortly afterwards, ManCity (6:30 p.m.) will face Chelsea FC at home, who parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca on January 1, 2026.

Cryptic and clothes: Why Chelsea and Maresca are parting ways

In November, he was still ahead of all other Premier League coaches, but now Chelsea FC has parted ways with Enzo Maresca. Is that even what he wants?

When Arne Slot came under increasing pressure at Liverpool FC a few weeks ago, the fans regularly chanted in support of him. For Enzo Maresca, who also had a successful debut season at Chelsea FC, it sounded different on Tuesday: “You don’t know what you’re doing,” chanted the Chelsea fans when the coach substituted Cole Palmer against Bournemouth (2-2).

Two days later, Maresca has indeed lost his job. What sounds like a mutual separation for the good of the club in the official, quote-free statement is the culmination of a rapid downward spiral after the 45-year-old Italian was voted Premier League “Manager of the Month” in November – for the second time in his career.

The astonishing 3-0 win over FC Barcelona in the Champions League and the 1-1 draw against league leaders Arsenal in late November, despite being a man down, were followed by only two wins in eight competitive games in December, including a 3-1 win over third-tier Cardiff City in the League Cup quarterfinals.
Chelsea, who were second before the Arsenal game, saw in the new year in fifth place.

Relationship between Chelsea and Maresca “completely broken”?

However, the fact that the club bosses called a crisis meeting on New Year’s Day was only marginally due to the poor results. Recently, tensions had become increasingly apparent. On December 13, after the 2-0 win against Everton, Maresca spoke of the “worst 48 hours” of his tenure “because many people did not support us.” These cryptic statements, which the former professional refused to elaborate on in the days that followed, are said to have gone down very badly with his bosses. They provided insights into the apparently troubled inner workings of the Blues.

According to the BBC, Maresca feels his work is not sufficiently appreciated, while other media outlets report that the coach would like to have more say in transfers. In addition, despite his contract running until 2029, Pep Guardiola’s former assistant is already being touted as a possible successor to the Catalan should he leave Manchester City in the summer. The Athletic reported on Thursday that Maresca had informed Chelsea at the end of October and in mid-December that he was in talks with people associated with the Sky Blues.

Although Maresca recently stated that he could “absolutely” promise to stay beyond the season, The Guardian reported that he wanted to leave the club immediately. His relationship with the club was “completely broken.” The fact that Maresca has recently been wearing official Chelsea outfits less and less often fits into the picture.

The fact is that Maresca, for whom Chelsea paid more than €11 million to then-promoted Leicester in the summer of 2024, exceeded expectations last season. In the final sprint, the youngest squad in the league managed to qualify for the Champions League, win the Conference League, and achieve a surprise triumph in the Club World Cup.

A possible successor is already being discussed

In addition to the short summer preparation, Maresca had to contend with a string of injuries during the current season. He was particularly hard hit by Levi Colwill’s cruciate ligament rupture at the start of training in the summer and the recurring enforced breaks for top scorer Palmer. Chelsea are still on course for the Champions League, for which fifth place may again be enough, as it will be for Newcastle in 2024/25. However, internal tensions seemed to overshadow everything else.

Maresca will no longer be in office by Sunday’s away game at ManCity. Liam Rosenior, who has been doing remarkable work at Chelsea’s partner club Racing Strasbourg since summer 2024, is being discussed as a possible new head coach. An interim successor is expected to be announced shortly.

Maresca no longer Chelsea coach

Club world champions Chelsea FC have parted ways with their head coach. Enzo Maresca faced several challenges during a difficult December.

New Year’s Eve is unlikely to have been a harmonious affair at Chelsea FC and in the Maresca household. The 2-2 home draw against Bournemouth the night before had been marred by further unrest, including chants against the coach from the stands, and the 45-year-old Italian was suspended very early in the new calendar year.

“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca are parting ways,” said the club statement on Thursday afternoon, which listed Maresca’s titles and thanked him for “his contribution.” The departing coach remains “an important part of the club’s recent history,” but both he and the club believe that “a change” will now help the latter get back on track, according to the statement, in which no one in charge is quoted.

The draw with the Cherries meant another league game without a win, with the Blues winning only one of their last seven games, having impressed against FC Barcelona (3-0) and Arsenal (1-1) at the end of November. However, a tricky December saw not only a sporting crisis, but above all an atmospheric one.

After the 2-0 win over Everton just under three weeks ago, Maresca spoke of the “worst 48 hours” he had experienced at the club, which he had led to both the Conference League title and the Club World Cup. It was not the first cryptic and telling statement from the man who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino 18 months ago.

In Sunday’s league clash at Manchester City, the already impatient club management will now be without their head coach, who, as the Catalan’s former assistant, is considered a potential future successor to Pep Guardiola at the Skyblues. Meanwhile, Liam Rosenior, coach of Chelsea’s partner club Racing Strasbourg, is being touted as Maresca’s permanent successor at Stamford Bridge.

Dennis Schröder responds to trade rumors surrounding him

0

Dennis Schröder has already played for ten different teams in his NBA career. According to the latest reports, another one could soon be added to that list. The struggling Kings are reportedly looking for a buyer for the DBB captain. Now, the 32-year-old has commented on the rumors for the first time.

Eight wins from 34 games, the play-in spots are increasingly out of reach, and top player Domantas Sabonis is still injured. The Sacramento Kings’ first third of the season can be summed up as disastrous. One bright spot so far has been the performance of Dennis Schröder, who, after mixed performances in the starting lineup, has now found his old strength in a bench role.

In contrast to his many underperforming teammates, Schröder’s recent performances have made him a popular target in trade talks. So it came as no surprise that the captain of the German national team was recently made available for just such a trade.

Schröder on trade rumors: “No matter who I play for…”

When asked about the rumor mill, Schröder was unimpressed: “It doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, nothing changes for me and my family. We have a three-year contract,“ he said, referring to the $45 million deal signed in the summer. ”No matter who I play for, I will always give my all.“

Nevertheless, Schröder reflected on his privileged situation: ”I’m happy to continue playing in this league. There are only about 400 players here, and I’ve been here for 13 years. I don’t know how many have played that long.”

Dennis Schröder was selected 17th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. After five years on the East Coast of the US, the point guard changed teams almost every year. In 868 career games, Schröder averages 13.9 points and 4.9 assists.

YouTube trailer leaks console release for Riot Fighter 2XKO

0

Another leak: Riot Games reveals the console launch of 2XKO on its own YouTube channel. Can this still be a coincidence—or is there a method to it?

Riot Games has apparently revealed the release date of its fighting game 2XKO too early. A trailer on the official YouTube channel announced the console launch on January 20 for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. A few hours later, the video was set to private again. Riot had already announced in an earlier video that 2XKO would be released in January. A specific date had not been given until now. That is exactly what has now been revealed – presumably by mistake. The trailer did not provide any further details: it shows various gameplay scenes, stream excerpts, and highlights from tournaments. It also includes a short clip from German streamer Dhalucard.

Leaks or marketing?

This isn’t the first time that information about 2XKO has been leaked to the public ahead of schedule. Even before Warwick was officially announced, the champion had already appeared in a skin trailer. Teemo was also known earlier than planned thanks to data mining, and Blitzcrank appeared as an image on the 2XKO website before his announcement.

The accumulation of such incidents raises the question of whether this is a deliberate marketing strategy. This is supported by the fact that many leaks run through Riot’s own channels. On the other hand, dataminers regularly find things – and the latest video disappeared after a short time.

Caitlyn officially confirmed after leaks

The latest addition to the roster will be Caitlyn – Riot Games has now officially confirmed this. This was also preceded by a leak of Jinx dialogues that left no room for interpretation: in them, she talks about a police officer with a British accent and a “big hat.”

Voice files from Katarina, Ryze, Olaf, Cassiopeia, Thresh, and Riven also appeared in the leak. However, these were not new recordings for 2XKO, but recycled audio snippets from League of Legends. Nevertheless, they could be a hint at upcoming fighters in the roster.

Riot Games plans to release a total of five new champions in 2026. The question remains as to how many of these will be officially announced and how many will be leaked to the public beforehand – or have already been leaked.

Then “slap me in the face”: Gabriel Bortoleto jokes with his friends

0

Gabriel Bortoleto is determined not to let Formula 1 fame go to his head, joking that his friends should slap him if he does change.

Sauber driver Gabriel Bortoleto completed his debut season in Formula 1 in 2025. The 21-year-old Brazilian had a difficult start, but then found his rhythm and achieved his best result of the season with sixth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The rookie was narrowly beaten in the team-internal duel against Nico Hülkenberg, but left a strong impression overall and received much praise. Nevertheless, Bortoleto is careful not to let the fame that comes with racing in Formula 1 go to his head.

“I haven’t changed at all,” the Brazilian told F1.com. “I think I’ve learned other things to manage my time better. But in terms of my personality and everything, I don’t think I’ve changed.”

“I enjoy making people smile and making people around me happy. I think that’s very important. I try to be that way. It’s just who I am,“ emphasizes Bortoleto, who has no intention of changing in the future.

Bortoleto has ”not been slapped in the face yet“

”I think in Formula 1 it’s very easy because you become a bit famous and then people start to change a little bit and you’re not really the same person anymore. So far, I haven’t felt any reason to change.“

”I always joke with my friends and the people on the team. I’ve said: If I ever change, slap me in the face,“ grins the 21-year-old, who secured the Formula 2 title in 2024. ”So far, I haven’t been slapped!”

Next year, however, Bortoleto will no longer be driving for Sauber, but for Audi. The Ingolstadt-based company is taking over the Swiss racing team and thus officially entering the premier class. “I’m looking forward to starting this new project,” adds the Brazilian.

“Being fully focused on next year’s project will be incredible, and the opportunity to lead and concentrate on that will be fantastic.” Let’s hope that the 21-year-old gets through his second year in Formula 1 without getting slapped by his friends.

The unicorn stays: Why Carlos Sainz is keeping his helmet detail in 2026

0

What started as a fan question became a symbol of Carlos Sainz’s first Williams podium—now it’s clear: the unicorn sticker will also be there in 2026

Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz has confirmed that he will continue to compete with a unicorn sticker on his helmet in the 2026 season. In a video released by his team Williams, Sainz said: “The sticker has to stay.”

The unicorn sticker originated from a fan campaign: In the fall of 2025, Williams released a video in which Sainz and his teammate Alexander Albon answered fan questions. A young girl with a stuffed unicorn asked the Formula 1 drivers whether the unicorn should be called “Sparkles” or “Sprinkles” — and whether Sainz would wear a corresponding sticker on his helmet for the rest of the year.

Shortly afterwards, the moment arrived: at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Sainz raced with the unicorn sticker – and finished third in the race, his first podium for Williams.

Williams then picked up on the unicorn theme again and placed the sticker on the trophy for third place. Team boss James Vowles said: “I’m pretty sure Sparkles or Sprinkles had something to do with it. So I guess it’ll stay on for a while!” Sainz added: “Until the end of the year, for sure.” He kept his word—and will apparently stick with it for 2026.

The unicorn has its own merchandising collection

But there’s more to it than just a nice gesture: Williams has launched its own merchandising collection based on the unicorn design. Part of the proceeds will go to the girl and her family.

And the Williams unicorn is very popular with fans. One user suggested on social media: “Why not create a special unicorn-style design [for the car] – with the colors of the helmet.” Others suggested inviting the young girl to the Formula 1 paddock in 2026.

Either way, the unicorn is here to stay – at least for some fans. One wrote: “Sparkles is now just part of Carlos.” Another user jokingly commented: “Carlos Sainz has extended his contract with Sparkles for the 2026 season.”

Shock before the Dakar Rally: Serious accident involving Toyota driver Juan Cruz Yacopini

Toyota starts Dakar 2025 with concerns – driver Yacopini injured in a leisure accident – defending champions Al-Rajhi/Gottschalk fit again after crash in Jordan

Toyota is once again represented by a large number of vehicles at this year’s Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. In addition to the top teams, several private drivers are also relying on the proven and robust Hilux T1+. A total of 19 cars are listed in the Ultimate class.

Toyota South Africa, which is responsible for developing the Hilux, has revised the car in detail. The GR Hilux IMT Evo has been further optimized—with even greater robustness, improved cockpit comfort, and enhanced performance on sandy terrain. “Our test program with the latest GR Hilux IMT Evo was very extensive,” says team boss Shameer Variawa. “We refined every detail as much as possible.” Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC originally planned to start with four cars. These were Juan Cruz Yacopini/Daniel Oliveiras, Saood Variawa/Francois Cazalet, Guy Botterill/Oriol Mena, and Joao Feirreira/Filipe Palmeiro. But in Saudi Arabia, only three cars will be in the bivouac. A few days before Christmas, a serious leisure accident occurred in Argentina, Yacopini’s home country. He was spending a day with friends at a lake. According to reports from Argentina, Yacopini jumped into the water and hit his head. He suffered spinal injuries.

He is said to be conscious in hospital, but the exact extent of his spinal injuries is not yet known. Toyota withdrew Yacopini’s car and did not nominate a replacement driver. His co-driver Oliveiras will therefore not be starting either.

“He’s like a brother to me. The most important thing is Juan’s recovery,” Oliveiras emphasized in Diari de Girona. Given the uncertainty surrounding the injury, the Spaniard also said: “There is a possibility that he may never be able to drive at the highest level again.”

Al-Rajhi/Gottschalk make their comeback

Among the contenders for victory in the Toyota camp are Yazeed Al-Rajhi and Timo Gottschalk, who are back driving for the Overdrive team. As defending champions, their Hilux will carry the number 201. After their Dakar victory, they experienced a year of ups and downs. They had a serious accident at the Jordan Rally in April. Al-Rajhi broke two vertebrae and Gottschalk also suffered back injuries. Both have since recovered and returned to competition.

Although they retired from the Morocco Rally, they recently won the smaller Bajas in Saudi Arabia, namely the Qassim Baja and the Jeddah Baja. “After our crash in Jordan, I didn’t get back into a rally car for a long time,” Gottschalk recalls.

But the German is reassuring: “Of course I feel great. I have my doctor’s approval, my back feels good, and I’ve already clocked up a lot of miles on my motorcycle.”

Overdrive has a total of three Hiluxes at the start. In addition to Al-Rajhi/Gottschalk, these are the two Chileans Hernan Garces/Juan Pablo Latrach and the Frenchmen Ronan Chabot/Gilles Pillot. However, they do not have the latest version of the Hilux like the defending champions. There is a new private team in the leading group that is relying on Toyota: Energylandia from Poland. Eryk Goczal caused a sensation in 2023 when he became the youngest driver to win a stage in his class. Ultimately, he also took overall victory in the Side-by-Side T4 class.

In 2024, the Goczal family competed in the Challenger T3 class, but their vehicles were disqualified due to technical irregularities. In 2025, they were absent from Saudi Arabia. Now the Goczal family is attacking in the Ultimate class. Eryk’s father Marek and uncle Michal also drive a Hilux.

Toyota has won a total of four overall victories in the Dakar Rally. Nasser Al-Attiyah won in 2019, 2022, and 2023, and Al-Rajhi won in 2025.

Experts see Mercedes advantage for 2026 – but Toto Wolff has doubts

0

New rules, old strength? While experts see Mercedes ahead in Formula 1 in 2026, Toto Wolff warns against taking anything for granted: “The glass is always half empty.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has responded to predictions that the Brackley-based racing team will be particularly strong in the 2026 Formula 1 season. While many experts expect a return to success based on the team’s historical strength in the engine department, the Austrian is exercising restraint.

“Well, I would very much hope so. But I’m a notorious pessimist and, for me, the glass is always half empty rather than half full,” explains the Mercedes team boss in a video debriefing of the team.

The 2026 season marks the beginning of a new era in the premier class. The technical regulations stipulate a new generation of hybrid drives in which power is generated in equal parts by the combustion engine and the electric component.

Since Mercedes dominated the first hybrid era from 2014 to 2021 at will, winning eight constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ titles with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg during that period, it stands to reason that the Silver Arrows will also master the next rule change. However, Wolff warns against exaggerated expectations.

Although internal targets have been set for both the power unit and the chassis, this is no guarantee of success. “Were these targets ambitious enough? Have we overlooked something? Will our execution be as flawless as it should be? I don’t know,” Wolff admits.

Wolff does not expect to see any initial indications of the balance of power until very late in the preparation phase. The first signs of the performance balance will be seen during the test drives at the end of January and then in Bahrain. However, according to Wolff, the key to success lies in the “continuous development of the tools throughout the season.”

TV expert Collins sees advantage for customer teams

Meanwhile, former strategist and current TV expert Bernie Collins sees a structural advantage for Mercedes. As she noted on Sky Sports F1, Mercedes will supply power units to three customer teams in 2026. In addition to McLaren and Williams, Alpine will also be competing with engines from Brixworth. This will give the manufacturer more opportunities to collect data and learn.

“I think the status quo between the teams will change because it will depend on who gets the engine right and who doesn’t,” Collins said. The perception in the paddock at the moment is that the teams that rely on Mercedes engines will come out on top. “But we don’t know. We haven’t compared them against each other yet,” Collins cautioned.

Nevertheless, the broad lineup is an asset. Collins argues: “They have three teams they supply. So they will learn much faster than Honda, which only supplies a single team.” Honda will be Aston Martin’s exclusive partner from 2026.
