BVB considers appeal against Hummels red: “It has nothing to do with respect”

Borussia Dortmund is considering taking legal action against the sending-off of Mats Hummels against Ajax on Wednesday night.

Borussia Dortmund are considering an appeal against the red card given to their head of defence Mats Hummels in their clash with Ajax Amsterdam. “That was a more than obvious and clearly provable wrong decision. It ruined our game and decided the match,” sporting director Michael Zorc told the SID on Thursday. He announced “contact with UEFA”.

Hummels had been sent off in the 29th minute on Wednesday for what was thought to be a rough foul on Antony. “I have no idea how you can come up with the idea of giving red as a referee at supposed Champions League level,” said the international himself on DAZN. Referee Michael Oliver (England) did consult with the video referee but did not look at the images himself and stood by his decision.

UEFA, Zorc said, “advertises respect, but this has nothing to do with respect. Oliver is standing ten metres from the screen, he has to watch that. Mats Hummels straddles Antony by 40 centimetres, he even gets on his foot.” BVB is currently examining the incident with its legal advisor.

Hummels had also said after the match that he was counting on being suspended. This would mean that he would miss the decisive match in Lisbon on 24 November for a place in the last 16.
