Boxing legend Wegner turns 80: This is how he celebrates

The legendary boxing trainer Ulli Wegner will celebrate his 80th birthday in a manageable setting.

“We want to celebrate it on a small scale. I haven’t made any big invitations – just two or three friends. Because of the Corona situation,” Wegner said in an SID interview before his special day on Tuesday.

All in all, Wegner looks at old age with mixed feelings: “That will probably be the case for everyone, that it seems pretty scary to them. But I live my life every day. And I don’t occupy myself with it. Maybe the only thing is that Corona has made it easier for me to say goodbye to what I’ve been successful at than I imagined. “

Wegner just back from rehab

Wegner, who made Sven Ottke, Arthur Abraham, Markus Beyer and Marco Huck among others world champions, has just returned from rehab after breaking his second neck of the femur. “I can’t walk properly yet, but still I’m doing very well physically because I have incredibly good stats. But the leg is not cooperating yet,” he said.

His resignation from the famous Sauerland 2019 boxing stable is still on Wegner’s mind. He said that he had had “not only a business relationship but also a friendly relationship” with the promoter legend Wilfried Sauerland, and that he had also been willing to talk. But the way the separation finally took place – a secretary handed him the letter of termination – he finds “quite pathetic at the end of a 23-year cooperation”.
