Berlin winner makes big leap

For Marketa Vondrousova, a long period of suffering comes to an end at the grass court tournament in the capital.

Czech player Marketa Vondrousova is the week’s biggest climber in the tennis world rankings. After winning the grass court tournament in Berlin, the 25-year-old jumped 91 places. The triumph in the run-up to Wimbledon (starting June 30) marked the end of a long period of suffering for Vondrousova.

In 2023, she won Wimbledon and climbed to sixth place in the WTA rankings. However, persistent shoulder problems led to enforced breaks and a drop to 164th place. Berlin was only her second tournament since February, and she also missed the second half of 2024 after undergoing surgery on her left shoulder.

Alexander Bublik improved by 15 places after his second title in Halle/Westphalia. The Kazakh is now ranked 30th.

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev climbed back into the top 10 (ninth place) despite losing in the final. There, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz closed the gap on leader Jannik Sinner (Italy) after his victory at Queen’s Club in London. The duo are well ahead of Alexander Zverev (Hamburg), who is ranked third.

Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) remains the best German in the rankings, dropping two places to 45th. Maria lost in the first round of her Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Bad Homburg on Sunday. She had previously won the title at Queen’s Club in a surprise victory.

Eva Lys (Hamburg) is also in the top 100 at number 62, but she withdrew from the Bad Homburg qualifiers due to injury.
