He is 28 years old, a Colombian international, still under contract with Liverpool FC, and Bayern Munich’s preferred candidate for their offense. Now, for two reasons, there may be movement in the desired transfer.
Two factors initially unrelated to Bayern Munich are increasing the likelihood of Luis Diaz moving to the German record champions. First, FC Barcelona, which was also considered interested in the Colombian, is likely to drop out of the race, as it has now signed Marcus Rashford from Manchester United and would not be able to offer as much transfer fee as Bayern.
More importantly, according to consistent media reports, Liverpool FC is close to signing Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt for a transfer fee not far from a three-digit million euro sum. Bayern Munich therefore believes that the English club will now be much more willing to sell Luis Diaz.
After all, Liverpool will have spent around €300 million in this transfer window on Ekitiké, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong (both Leverkusen) and Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), while their income currently stands at around €60 million. A transfer of Luis Diaz would somewhat offset this substantial deficit.
Number three behind Kane and Hernandez?
However, a transfer for the desired player, who is expected to play on the left wing for Bayern Munich and could also replace Harry Kane at center forward or play behind him, will not come cheap. Liverpool has apparently rejected an offer of €67.5 million, so the final price is likely to exceed €70 million.
This would make Luis Diaz the third most expensive signing in Bayern’s history. Only Kane and Lucas Hernandez cost more. Kane joined in 2023 for a fixed fee of €95 million plus bonuses from Tottenham Hotspur, while defender Hernandez joined in 2019 for the fixed release clause of €80 million from Atletico Madrid. Is Luis Diaz closing in on that figure?
At least the Colombian is said to have long since signaled his willingness to move to Munich. Regardless of this personnel issue, Bayern’s hopes are pinned on Nick Woltemade. However, the ideas of VfB Stuttgart and Bayern for the 23-year-old new national player are so far apart that an agreement still seems unlikely.
