Bayern Signs Forward Wimberg

Bayern Munich have secured the services of Niklas Wimberg. The 26-year-old is leaving the Niners Chemnitz thanks to an exit clause.

National basketball player Niklas Wimberg will play for runners-up Bayern Munich in the future. As the five-time German champions announced on Sunday, the 26-year-old power forward signed a two-year contract in Munich until 2024. In the past three seasons, Wimberg had played in the Bundesliga for the Niners Chemnitz. There he still had a contract until 2023, but was able to leave the Saxons early due to an opt-out clause.

The Oldenburg native has already completed the first training sessions in his new home. “I have always dreamed and worked
and worked towards playing at the highest European level,” the winger said, according to the club’s statement. He said he now has the opportunity to “be a part of something big in one of the strongest organisations in Europe”.

“Exceptional ambition “

Wimberg, who is not currently in the national team squad, was part of the DBB selection that qualified for the 2021 Olympics. The 2.06-metre tall basketball player made two short appearances at the Summer Games in Tokyo – in total he has played 14 times for the national team so far. “All in all, he has proven that he has earned this challenge; especially since his ambition is unusually strong to want to compete at Euroleague level,” said Bayern sports director Daniele Baiesi.
