Baumgartlinger officially ends his professional career

Julian Baumgartlinger will no longer play for a professional club. The ÖFB will bid farewell to the former Austrian national team captain during the international match against Germany on Tuesday (8.45pm)

Julian Baumgartlinger announced the end of his career as a professional footballer to journalists in Vienna on Monday evening.

The 35-year-old native of Salzburg was under contract with German Bundesliga club Augsburg until the end of the pre-season and made his last of a total of 255 Bundesliga appearances (seven goals, twelve assists) in a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on April 29. He then had to take a break due to a knee injury.

Baumgartlinger has repeatedly struggled with injuries in recent years

The midfielder played for 1860 Munich from 2001, followed by spells at Austria Vienna (2009 to 2011), Mainz (2011 to 2016), Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2016 to 2022) and most recently Augsburg. The family man currently works as an expert for “Sky” and is also training in sports management.

A goal for the ÖFB selection

The ÖFB will officially bid farewell to the long-serving captain ahead of Tuesday’s international match against Germany at the Happel Stadium. Baumgartlinger took part in two European Championships (2016, 2021) and is number eight in the all-time ÖFB appearances list with 84 caps.

He made his debut on September 9, 2009 in the 1:1 World Cup qualifier against Romania in Bucharest and played his last international match in the 3:1 win over North Macedonia at Euro 2021. Baumgartlinger’s only goal for the national team came in a 2-1 friendly win over the Czech Republic in Olomouc on June 3, 2014
