Wojciech Szczesny (35) has extended his contract with FC Barcelona until 2027, the Catalans announced on Monday. There is now an interesting competition for the goalkeeper position.
A few weeks ago, sporting director Deco revealed in an interview that Wojciech Szczesny’s contract extension was considered “certain.” The extension was finalized on Monday, with the 35-year-old goalkeeper signing with FC Barcelona until 2027.
Following Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury, the Pole has proven himself to be a reliable backup and has now earned himself a new contract in Catalonia.
At the beginning of October, Barcelona brought Szczesny out of retirement and responded to ter Stegen’s injury with an external signing, as expected at the time. Previously, substitute goalkeeper Inaki Pena had stood in for the German number 1. That remained the case until the end of January, when the Pole secured his place between the posts for the Spanish champions.
Szczesny made 15 league appearances and also played eight games in the Champions League. He thus played a key role in the successful season, which ended with the league title and cup victory.
Three prominent goalkeepers at FC Barcelona
This creates a very interesting situation in goal at FC Barcelona. Of course, there is ter Stegen, who was the undisputed number one for the Catalans before his injury. However, the future of the 33-year-old is uncertain, with sporting director Deco making it clear that playing time is not guaranteed for the German international.
This has to do with the fact that Barcelona signed Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia for €26.3 million and gave him a six-year contract. With the new man, Szczesny and ter Stegen, the Catalans now have three prominent goalkeepers in their ranks. Hansi Flick is therefore spoiled for choice.
